Malta Libraries…part of the change!

The initiative would consist of 3 street market visits between the 20th and 26th of September where we promote the libraries’ services to the community; which services are free and contribute towards a better quality of education. During the same week (20th to 26th) we will be publishing informative posts featuring different books (physical and digital) which contribute to more SDGs awareness.

Malta Libraries has public libraries dotted around Malta and Gozo, with the aim of promoting reading habits and literacy in the community. Malta Libraries’ services are free and therefore accessible for all age groups as well as all social groups. Both the physical books present in the branches mentioned above and the Central Public Library in Floriana, as well as the digital books available on the Libby and Octavo apps, offer endless content and knowledge in relation to all SDGs.

The aim of the initiative is to bring about awareness of both the services and the books/content in light of contributing toward a variety of SDGs.

Through a series of street market visits, in either of the following localities: Mosta, Rabat, Qormi, B’Kara, Zejtun, Birgu, Poala, Zabbar, B’Bugia, Zurrieq, we will be creating a space to meet people of the community and explain better to them the services we offer. These in-person encounters enable the community to increase its awareness of the nearby libraries, and the free services offered by the entity, especially for people who do not have access to the internet or social media. Such initiative targets mainly SDG 4 – increasing the quality of education, however, there are other underlying SDGs which are being targeted such as SDG 10, where we are reducing inequalities since the service is open to all, including those with learning difficulties, visual impairment or the housebound, to mention a few.

To target those who are following our social media platforms, we will be organising an online campaign – whereby through our official pages (Facebook and Instagram) we suggest reading material which informs and educates around several SDGs. For example recipe books that include less food waste recipes, books about life underwater, etc.
