MWAM’s Community Kitchen Project “SAHHA” provides a safe space for asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant women to meet regularly to plan, prepare home-cooked meals, and share healthy, affordable meals aiming to achieve together the following goals and objectives:

– To promote integration and empowerment through employment.

– Sharing the love of cooking with migrant women living in Malta while working in the community kitchen as a space that understands cultural differences and embraces diversity.

– Providing international, healthy, and ethnic dishes to the public.

– Offering cuisine which reflects the different nationalities of the migrant women in Malta.

– Promoting and improving their cooking skills to enable them to have access to the food industry and the labor market in Malta.

– Generating income aiming to maintain the services provided by SAHHA to migrant women and their children affected by violence against women, the pandemic, poverty ….etc.

– Having funds to recruit more asylum seekers, refugees, and women to cook in the kitchen while also following the health regulations in Malta.

– Utilising project activities to advocate for the empowerment and integration of migrant women in Malta.

MWAM’s Community Kitchen project ‘SAHHA’! is a project that was born with the idea to promote integration and empowerment through employment and a shared love of cooking in a safe space for asylum seekers, refugees, and migrant women to meet regularly to plan, prepare home-cooked meals, and share healthy, affordable meals, to generate income and donations aiming to maintain the services provided by MWAM to migrant women and their children affected by violence against women, the pandemic, poverty ….etc.

The SAHHA project was established to find solutions and create opportunities for female asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants seeking employment in the food industry.

The SAHHA community kitchen is one of MWAM’s projects that has been running since 2018 and has won the following Awards:

– National Supporting Business Awards 2022 from the Department of Commerce, within the MINISTRY FOR THE ECONOMY, EUROPEAN FUNDS, and LANDS.

– U.S. State Department’s International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) Impact Awards in 2022.

– Malta Social Impact Award for Audience Participation award in 2017.

The majority of migrant women already possess cooking skills and seek an opportunity to find a suitable job or build a business to empower themselves and support their families. MWAM surveys and research have indicated that a large number of Malta’s public is interested in ethnic food catering services.

Consequently, MWAM decided to invest in these cooking skills by improving migrant women’s knowledge and awareness of hygiene and generating income by offering cooking and catering services to the public.
