Public Perceptions of Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management

4 October @ 17:39

To disseminate knowledge/findings from research carried out under the EcoScope project, on public perceptions, preferences, and values regarding Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM).

An online webinar, advertised through media articles and accompanied by a webpage, will share highlights of research under the EcoScope project, funded by Horizon 2020. The research was based on a representative survey collected from three countries including Malta, with questions concerning fish consumption, food security, public perceptions of fishery impacts, current and ecosystems-based fishery policy preferences/expectations, and the relationship between marine environment exposure, fish consumption and societal well- being.

Insights from the survey suggest that fish and fisheries products occupy an important space in the diets of the Europeans interviewed and that exposure to both this (tangible) marine ecosystem service as well as other less tangible or indirect Marine Ecosystems Services are associated with higher levels of wellbeing. There are several aspects where Malta is distinct from other countries. We aim to increase awareness of these scientific findings with field experts and stakeholders, as well as politicians and the public in general.
