Goal 16 : Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Why does this goal matter?
People need to feel safe within their society irrespective of sex, racial or ethnic origin, age, disability, sexual orientation or religious belief, and whichever walk of life they come from. Weak institutions and limited access to justice threaten sustainability, as crime, corruption and discrimination lead to the disruption of peaceful societies and violation of human rights. Thus, ensuring access to justice and building effective and accountable institutions will contribute to socioeconomic growth and development.
What are this goal’s targets?
REDUCE MATERNAL MORTALITY
Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere
FIGHT COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against and torture of children
REDUCE MORTALITY FROM NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES AND PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH
Promote the rule of law at the national and international levels and ensure equal access to justice for all
PREVENT AND TREAT SUBSTANCE ABUSE
By 2030, significantly reduce illicit financial and arms flows, strengthen the recovery and return of stolen assets and combat all forms of organized crime
REDUCE ROAD INJURIES AND DEATHS
Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms
UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE CARE, FAMILY PLANNING
Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels

END ALL PREVENTABLE DEATHS UNDER 5 YEARS OF AGE
Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements
INCREASE HEALTH FINANCING AND SUPPORT HEALTH WORKFORCE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Strengthen relevant national institutions, including through international cooperation, for building capacity at all levels, in particular in developing countries, to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime
