Adopt A Plant – Protect a Slope: A Community Awareness Campaign for the Conservation of Għajn Tuffieħa

A community conservation activity at Għajn Tuffieħa, involving the planting of native esparto grass to help reduce erosion and restore the clay slopes.

A community conservation activity is proposed at the Għajn Tuffieħa clay slopes in late September or early October, inviting local communities to take part in the restoration and protection of this important natural site through the planting of native esparto grass.

Each one-hour morning session will begin with a short introduction on the ecological importance of the clay slopes, the causes of erosion, and the role of esparto grass in stabilising the soil and restoring habitats. Participants will then take part in the planting process, including soil preparation and watering, under appropriate guidance.

The activity aims to encourage greater awareness and appreciation of Malta’s natural areas while fostering a stronger sense of connection and responsibility towards the site. Participants will also be encouraged to follow the progress of their planted grass during future visits and provide water when necessary and appropriate, helping to extend the impact of the activity beyond the initial volunteering session.
