Research and Innovation
Recognise groundbreaking sustainability projects or technologies that significantly contribute to sustainable development. Applicants under this category can consider:
- Efforts of original and creative research or projects, contributing towards sustainable development for Maltese communities.
- Efforts of long-term influence and sustainability. This is to make sure the research or tool created has a long lifespan which will continue seeing Malta developing sustainably overtime.
- Efforts to make the data or tool developed be easily accessible or affordable to the general public and all stakeholders.
- Efforts of ease and implementation in local communities.
- Efforts to target and involve marginalised communities.
- Efforts to inspire other fellow researchers to create innovative and sustainable research projects.
- Any other efforts that lead to innovative initiatives or technologies that made a meaningful contribution to advancing sustainable development.
Specific Eligibility Criteria
This award will apply specifically to stakeholders that are:
- Academics
Submissions must relate to one clearly defined project or initiative implemented by the applicant. The submitted project may comprise multiple activities, actions, or events, provided that these were delivered as part of the same overarching project and under a single project title or objective. Applications may not consist of a collection, summary, or portfolio of unrelated projects or of all work carried out by the applicant within the eligible time period. Where an applicant has undertaken several distinct initiatives, one specific project must be selected and submitted.
Prizes
The winner of this category will be awarded €2,000 in funding to further strengthen and scale its contribution towards sustainable development, along with a trophy in recognition of this achievement. The second and third place recipients will also be awarded a commemorative token in recognition of their accomplishment.

EVALUATION Criteria
1. Impact (45%):
Successful impact includes measurable results in shifting people’s behaviours and public perceptions and/or influencing public policies and/or budgetary allocations towards the acceleration of the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Malta’s Sustainable Development Strategic Goals. Successful impact also indicates remarkable improvements in social, economic and environmental conditions including gender equality, health, capacity development, inclusion, economic stability, food security, climate adaptation and/or mitigation, environmental protection, and/or peace.
2. Methodology and Innovation (30%):
How innovative is this project/initiative? How does the project/initiative build upon a breakthrough idea? Is the research grounded in well-sourced, ethical research and credible data?
3. Scalability/Replicaility (15%):
How does this project/initiative have the potential to be scaled up and/or be replicated in other contexts to accelerate the achievement of United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Malta’s Sustainable Development Strategic Goals? Has it already been scaled up and/or replicated?
4. Public vote (10%):
Each shortlisted nomination will be put on social media and the public will vote on the award they believe deserves to win.
