At compulsory education level, the Migrant Learners’ Unit (MLU) within Malta’s Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR) supports Third Country Nationals to fill in the required school pre-registration application form, and in their quest to obtain the necessary supporting official documentation from different entities concerned for the submission of a complete ‘Pre-Registration Form’ to enrol a migrant child in a state kindergarten (for children who are three years and over but still under five years of age) or in a state school, open to learners between 5 and 16 years of age. The MLU within MEYR would not have the actual figures of migrant learners who after registration with MLU then attend school since, as far as registration in a state kindergarten / state school is concerned, its role is to receive, process and input/register migrant learner information on the MySchool platform. The actual attendance of a migrant learner would be determined by the migrant learners’ guardians and as importantly, by the actual kindergarten or school concerned. Enrolment figures may therefore differ from the MLU’s registration figures given that parents/guardians may concurrently opt to take parallel action to successfully enrol their children in a private school, or to resettle in a different country or even to return to their home country shortly after arriving in Malta, amidst other possibilities.
