No Place to Land: An Awareness Campaign on the Impact of Overdevelopment on Bird Habitats

A series of interactive events exploring SDG 6 and SDG 15, highlighting overdevelopment’s impacts on Malta’s water resources, protected areas and migratory birds.

BirdLife Malta is organising a series of three educational events to raise awareness about the interconnectedness of healthy ecosystems, water quality, and biodiversity conservation, while highlighting the environmental pressures caused by unsustainable development.

Visitors can participate in water quality monitoring activities at Għadira (19 September) and Simar Nature Reserves (27 September).

BirdLife Malta’s team will demonstrate monitoring techniques, explain key water quality parameters, and discuss the importance of healthy wetlands for plants, birds, and other wildlife. Participants will also learn how overdevelopment contributes to air, water, and noise pollution, placing pressure on these habitats.

During peak autumn migration (20 September), participants will join a guided raptor watch at Buskett Woodlands. Alongside observing birds of prey, we will discuss how overdevelopment threatens important natural areas such as Buskett and Comino through habitat loss and disturbance, impacting protected bird species and biodiversity.

Through these activities, participants will gain a deeper understanding on the links between healthy ecosystems, clean water, and biodiversity conservation, while discussing the risks of unsustainable development.
